Save the Children becomes strategic partner

The Norwegian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia has chosen Save the Children Norway as strategic partner on the work combating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the country.
Being a strategic partner involves that Save the Children Norway will administrate the project combating FGM in Ethiopia funded by the Norwegian government. |

Save the Children will be responsible for the technical project development and potentially identify additional partners. The actual programme work will be carried out by local partners and other parties.
The project period is set to five years and includes a financial grant of NOK 44 418 775.

About the project
The goal for the project is to contribute to the eradication of FGM and to improvement of the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls by ensuring harmonized and coordinated approach in the Norwegian Government supported efforts combating FGM.
These are the main objectives for the project:
- Through elimination of FGM and other interventions enhancing women’s and girls’ empowerment to fulfil and ensure the sexual and reproductive health rights and livelihood security conditions of women and girls living in Afar pastoralists’ communities
- To make local governance processes in the Afar pastoralist communities become increasingly response to women/girls’ the sexual and reproductive health rights and livelihood security through an established institutional framework.
- Through the use of research based social content media communication strategy, to raise awareness and knowledge on FGM, HIV/AIDS and reproductive health of women and girls at national level giving special media treatment to the Afar and Somali regions.
- To build the capacity of creative writers and make them generate audience focused qualitative information that is culturally sensitive, appropriate and acceptable radio serial entertainment drama.
- To update the first Baseline Survey conducted through examining major changes observed on prevalence, knowledge, attitude intention and behavioural change towards harmful traditional practises at national level and recommend strategies in future direction.
